Positives on this film-
This film is a classic Dr Suess story and it definitely lived up to expectations. Horton shows us that even the smallest things in life matter and we should never forget that, because our seemingly small mistake or action can cause a large effect on innocent people’s lives, so we see him take complete care of this tiny spec vowing to protect it with his life. One clear message is that you don’t need to see to believe. This comes into play when we see the Kangaroo and Hortons closest friend turning on him because he is thought to be lying, yet even when he is threatened harm he stays faithful to himself and the spec and although he cannot see them he knows that all life matters. This is the perfect message to teach our children because it can be applied to their everyday life when they doubt their religion or themselves because the can't see the light at the end of the tunnel but this shows if you believe ,anything can happen. We experience the monumental growth of JoJo and watch as he goes from being shy and quiet too opening up ,revealing his amazing voice which he had hid. This just show kids although they may be small, shy, quiet and feel misunderstood they can still have such an amazing impact on those around them. This movie brings out the imagination in everyone whether it’s the way Dr Seuss portrayed the quirky characters or the colourful landscape this movie will have even the sternest adults feeling like a kid again.
Negatives about the film
In this film we see the Kangaroo crush Horton and the children’s beliefs, she spreads the word that he is lying and even gets hit men to go and physically attack him. She is relentless and terrorizes our stories hero as he tries with all is might to protect the town. Kangaroo is very hostile even destroying her son’s clover without any remorse. This is a bad message to teach our youth as it is showing it’s not good to have an imagination and believe in what you deem real, it is crushing kid’s imagination with reality. There is excessive scenes of bullying in this film with Kangaroo abusing Horton and getting others to steal from him, tie him up, chase him, betray him and physically harm him. We must be cautious with these parts as kids could interpret it wrong and begin thinking that to get what they want the can just go around and be violent towards others. Part way through this movie we meet the small, underestimated Jojo and see him struggle with his dad who is trying to force him into being the next mayor even though deep down he feels lost yet doesn’t want to upset his father and his expectations. His feeling of deep sadness can be make his character seem depressed and may be a touchy subject to viewers experiencing the same problems that are all too real. We get a glimpse of black mailing when we note kangaroo telling Horton to hand it over threatening to turn hid friends against him this is not something we should be displaying to young viewers as they shouldn’t be exposed to this kind of behaviour that may encourage the involvement in crime or manipulation with malicious intentions.
My opinion on Horton Hears a Who-
In my opinion Horton hears a Who is a creative film which brings out the imagination in all ages. It shows that even though you can't see something ,that necessarily doesn’t mean you can’t believe in it. I love this quirky environment the movie is set in it is very pleasing to the eyes as it is, bright, bubbly and colourful. I enjoy watching the characters have a good laugh together as Horton decides he is going to be this films hero and save an entire world. It is interesting to note Horton’s determination towards what he cares for and how he is truly the definition of a gentle giant. Some recommendations for this film is to show less violence especially physical as it shouldn’t be encouraged.
Also to add more character Horton meets through his journey as we only stick to a small group of know characters and it would of enhanced the movies success if more bubbly unique creatures were added to the plot.
